Amanda Palmer does a good line in cheery songs about rape. I hadn’t seen this, thank you!
This song has really grown on me since I first heard it, because I don’t really think it’s as silly as it seems. The girl in the song has been raped, goes through an abortion, and gets betrayed by a friend, but what gets her through all that is music and obsessing over pop stars. I bet Amanda gets letters from fans like the one the girl in the song sent to Oasis. She seems to be gently mocking, but also paying homage to the importance of pop music in our lives.
